Three rooms of heat at a Macau sauna

Published

The hot pool hall at 八湯御桑拿, Macau

Most saunas in Macau are massage houses that happen to keep a pool in the corner. 八湯御桑拿 was built the other way round, and the sign outside says so before you reach the door: 湯 means the bath. On the fourth floor of the New Orient Landmark Hotel, the bathing side is not one steam cubicle. It is three rooms, each holding its heat differently.

The venue is new. It opened on 26 August 2026, and nothing in it has had time to age. The first thing you notice walking in is the smell of wood.

A guest came in last month meaning only to shower and go back to his hotel. He spent most of the night on the bathing side instead, and it was getting light by the time he left. The heat is the first half of the evening, and that is the reason to come early.

Coming early does not mean watching the clock. The venue is open 24 hours, so all three rooms are there at any hour. Therapists are on shift daily from 13:00 until 06:00 the next morning.

Dry first, and the heat arrives from behind you

The hinoki dry sauna sits furthest in. Pull the door and the baked cedar reaches you before the temperature does. The heat does not come at your face; it settles across your shoulders and works its way round to the front, and the sweat is the last thing to show up.

There is nothing on the walls to look at, only grain, which turns out to be the point. The best stretch in that room is usually not the hottest one. It is the moment you notice you have stopped thinking about tomorrow. Every fixture on the bathing side is listed on the bath facilities page.

Then wet, and the person opposite becomes an outline

Rinse off and the glass steam room is next door. Once the steam rises the panes go white and whoever is sitting across from you is reduced to an outline.

Wet heat and dry heat do different jobs. The dry room makes you sweat; the steam room makes you stop. Your breathing slows, talking stops being worth the effort, and your sense of time goes soft. When somebody pushes the door open, a thin draught slides in along the floor, crosses your feet, and is gone inside a few seconds.

Then water, and this is the long part

The hot pool hall has a high ceiling, warm lighting and a waterline that comes up around the collarbone. The heat the first two rooms built is finally held in place here.

It is also the easiest of the three to stay in. The dry room and the steam room both have a limit, a point where your body tells you to get out. The pool has no such line. You can hook an arm over the edge, tip your head back and do nothing at all for a while, water moving as somebody gets in, settling again. By the time you have walked all three, you are loose. The place is roomy, the mood is Japanese calm crossed with Chinese detail rather than anything showy, and the quiet is genuine. Each room is described at more length in the story of the bath house.

The lantern corridor, and a room with its own tub

Past the bathing side runs a Chinese lattice corridor with red lanterns overhead. One stretch of it is lit in colour, throwing light across the woodwork, and walking it feels like crossing into a different part of the evening. At the far end is the dining and rest lounge, there whenever you want to sit down.

The private massage rooms are on the other side, and each one has a bathtub inside it, so there is no walking back out to the hall to rinse afterwards. The whole route is laid out on the ritual page.

One thing worth knowing in advance: the minutes printed on a package start when the therapist begins. Reception, the changing room and however long you spend in the three hot rooms are not counted against them. Within opening hours, everything before the treatment room door is your own time, which is why arriving early effectively gives you the bathing side for nothing.

You can also stay the night. There are paid private rest rooms, with pricing and available hours quoted when you book, and the lounge rest area costs nothing.

September 2026 rates and the perks for booking through this site

The rates published on 18 September 2026 run like this: packages at 3,399 to 3,899 for the starter band, 4,099 to 6,499 for the popular and premium bands (popular 4,099 – 6,499, premium 6,099 – 6,499) and 7,499 for the Japanese-theme package; and a second therapist in the same hour (雙鐘) at MOP 1,299 to 3,900.

A 10% service charge is added on top of every figure above, and all six bands are set out in full on the rates page. Booking through this site — and only through this site — brings three things: a free private car both ways, two free add-on services of your choosing, picked once you are there rather than decided in advance, and a free consultation.

Rates follow what the venue posts on the day, with the current menu confirmed when you book.

The questions we are asked most

If I arrive in the middle of the night, is the bathing side open?

Yes. The venue is open 24 hours and all three hot rooms can be used at any time. Therapists are on shift daily from 13:00 until 06:00, so treatments are arranged inside that window.

What order should I take the three rooms in?

Dry sauna, then the steam room, then the pool. The body moves from dry heat to wet heat and then hands the whole thing over to water, which holds it. Any other order works too; the heat just builds more slowly.

When do the minutes on a package start counting?

When the therapist starts. Reception, changing and your time in the pool and steam rooms are not part of that number.

Which floor is it on?

Fourth floor of the New Orient Landmark Hotel, in the NAPE district of Macau, about 1 km from the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf. You can see the rooms first in the gallery, the floor and location are on the directions page, and the car to the door is arranged by us.

湯 means the bath, and 八湯御 put that on the sign before anyone walked in. Building the bathing side as three separate rooms is what gives the first half of an evening somewhere to go. Whatever hour you arrive, the heat is already there.

Send a message with the date, how many of you there are and roughly when you want to start. The car and the details of the day are arranged from our end, and booking has WhatsApp, Telegram and LINE. By the time you get there the cedar room is already hot.
